Few Last Minute Rumors Come Out About iPhone 6 and iWatch

Share this:

The iPhone 6, iWatch and Apple’s new mobile payment system are expected to be announced at their special event tomorrow morning.  Today a few reports came out across various networks that give us more details about the next-generation phone and Apple’s first wearable product.  Here’s a quick summary of today’s rumors:

iPhone 6

China Mobile, which is the world’s largest mobile operator, leaked the full tech specs for the iPhone 6 in addition to already starting preorders.  These specs may be based on what they hope the phone will be like or more likely, what the phone actually is like.

  • A8 quad-core processor
  • 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera
  • 4.7″ model: resolution of 1134 x 750 pixels with a sapphire display
  • 4.7″ model dimensions: 7mm thin, 138mm long and 67mm wide
  • waterproof and dustproof
  • colors: gold, silver and space gray
  • storage sizes: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB

In addition to China Mobile’s specs, other rumors for the phone came out today as well:

  • 4.7″ and 5.5″ iPhones will be launching at the same time on September 19th, but the larger one will be available in limited quantities (iGen.fr)
  • The smaller iPhone will be called “iPhone 6” and the larger will be “iPhone 6 Plus” (Macotakara) (remember the rumored iPhone Math from a couple of years ago?)

iWatch

  • First pictures of the watch leaked online via Reddit and give us some of the tech specs: microphone, speaker, Siri, flexible touchscreen, waterproof up to 20 feet, 4 colors and 2 sizes available, battery lasting about a day, no Lightning port (only wireless charging) and mass production to begin in January
  • The watch may also have its own App Store and apparently some major developers are already working on apps for it

Mobile Payment Plan

  • Apple may be looking to incentivize customers and businesses to use its new system by with a special rewards program (Bank Innovation)
  • They also may be using implementing a feature called tokenization into their plan, which only transmits one-time use codes for purchases instead of account numbers and other confidential information (Bank Innovation)

The Event

  • The New York Times claims that U2 will be playing even though the band has denied involvement in the special event.

iWatch Final Rumor Roundup

Share this:

Apple is about to enter a new product category with their smart watch.  The device, which is rumored to either be called the “iWatch” or “iBand”, will offer fitness and health tracking capabilities, function as an accessory to the iPhone and be fashionable.  There haven’t been any actual leaked images for it just yet, but multiple reports from major networks have confirmed details about it.  Based on these details, we have written a final rumor roundup.

For the external design of the watch, The New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal and Ming Chi-Kuo all wrote reports about what they expect.  Their information is based on sources inside the supply chain and educated guesses based on Apple’s history.  For the display, it will be made of sapphire, curved to easily fit on the user’s wrist and have a rectangular display of 1.3″ and 1.5″.  It is thought that Apple wants to offer at least two models of their smart watch.  The casing of the watch will likely be made of aluminum since Apple uses this material in nearly all their products (e.g. iPhone, MacBook).

For internal specifications:

  • 512MB of RAM
  • 8GB of storage
  • NFC (to transmit information from its sensors to the iPhone 6) and Bluetooth (to connect with older iPhones)
  • ten or more internal sensors to monitor fitness activity and send data to the Health app
  • wireless charging, with an unfortunately weak battery life
  • price: $300-$400 (final price point hasn’t been determined yet)
  • announcement date: September 9th
  • release date: January 2015

Other then this information, not too much is known about the device.  This is one product, although rumored since late 2012, that Apple will be surprising us with. For more information about products we do have information about, check out our expectation guide.

Three Major Reports Confirm Details for iWatch Ahead of Next Week's Event

Share this:

At next week’s confirmed Apple event, we will likely see the release date for iOS 8, the redesigned iPhone 6 and at the end, the iWatch should make an appearance.  The iPhone 6 has been covered inside and out so we have a very good idea of what to expect.  The iWatch, however, hasn’t had many leaked parts and the only information we know comes from sources speaking out from within the supply chain.  The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the infamous KGI Securities analyst, Ming Chi-Kuo, give us more details about what to expect for Apple’s wearable.  Again, no pictures, just inside information.

According to The New York Times, the iWatch will have a flexible sapphire display so it will conform better to the user’s wrists.  It may not be a complete wraparound display, like the picture above, but it won’t be completely flat either.  The sensors inside the watch will also be more accurate then other fitness devices since Apple has invested a lot into research and development. They will track health and fitness information, like steps taken and heart beat.  The report goes on to say that the watch will have wireless charging and have NFC capabilities for connecting to the iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal reports similar information about the iWatch and also gives us more details.  Not only will the display be made of sapphire and curved, but it will have a OLED screen and be available in two sizes.  The report also says that the iWatch will use NFC technology for communicating with the iPhone.  When the wearable devices collects user’s data, it will transmit it via NFC to the iPhone’s new Health app.  All the data collected from the watch and apps on the phone will be available there.

Finally, Ming Chi-Kuo gives us a very detailed report via 9to5Mac that provides us with more information about the iWatch.  For internal specifications, the watch will feature 8GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and be available in two display sizes: 1.3″ and 1.5″.  The watch will feature a rectangular face as compared to the circular design, which has been seen in many concepts and is on the Moto 360.  Kuo also believes the watch will feature aluminum as its primary material because of Apple’s history with devices and it will come in the same colors as the iPhone 6 (gold, silver and space gray).  The reports ends by saying that it will be shown off at next week’s event, but it won’t be available until 2015.

Touch ID, the fingerprint sensor found on the iPhone 5s, is rumored to be found on every new iOS device this year.  A new report by KGI Securities claims that Apple will put Touch ID onto the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.  The report doesn’t mention anything about iPods, but other rumors have suggested that Apple will not be updating these this year.  Touch ID sensor shipments would increase by 233% if they were included on all future iPhones and iPads.  In addition, the report says that the internal components of the fingerprint sensor will be more durable and likely made of tin.  Recent rumors also suggested that Touch ID would be included on this year’s iPads.

Apple vs. Samsung Trial Results

The verdict is in for the trial between Samsung and Apple.  Although this is only the second trial and there will likely be more to follow as both companies release new products, this one resulted with Samsung being guilty of infringing on three patents and Apple infringing upon one.  Although Apple was suing Samsung for $2.2 billion in damages, Samsung was ruled by the jury to pay only $119 million.  Since Apple was ruled to also be infringing upon one of Samsung’s patents, it was ruled to pay $158,400 in damages.  For a breakdown of the patents infringed upon, check out iDownloadBlog’s report.

iPhone 6 Case Leaked

Nowhereelse.fr found a picture on MobileFun.co.uk that is supposedly of cases for the iPhone 6.  The smaller case would fit a phone with a 4.7-inch display and the larger would fit a phone with a 5.5-inch display.  The case has all the normal holes: lock button on top, Lightning port on bottom, holes for the microphone, etc.  There is a new hole on the left side of the case that recent reports are suggesting will be the new home of the lock button.  It’s hard to tell if this case is actually made for the iPhone 6 or if case makers are just getting excited.  Nowhereelse.fr notes that MobileFun is not very reliable and also this case doesn’t line up with this 3D case model we saw earlier this week.

iTunes to Get Major Update

iTunes Radio is struggling with competitors like Pandora so Apple is looking to bring more interest to their radio and with the iTunes Store.  Rumors recently have suggested Apple will increase the sound quality of songs in iTunes, iTunes Radio may become its own app for both iOS and Android and the entire iTunes experience may be updated.

Kickstarter Project of the Week Update

This past week, I posted about the EverDock Go project on Kickstarter.  FUZ Designs had enormous success with the EverDock that they decided to create a version that stayed in the car.  As of my posting, they already received their full funding and still had 36 days left to go.  If you are interested in purchasing the EverDock Go, click here to get one at their Kickstarter price of $39 (regular retail will be $50).

The iWatch, a rumored smart watch built by Apple, has keep coming back with new rumors.  A bill of materials has been leaked online that shows the suppliers, some technical specifications and the release date.

The suppliers, as reported, will be Quanta Computer with Richtek Technology TPK supplying chips and sapphire touch panels.  The processor will be designed by Apple and then produced by Samsung, which isn’t uncommon for Apple.  Past processors for the iPhone have been made by Samsung as well.

For the technical specifications, the bill of materials calls for suppliers with sapphire touch panels.  Based on this, the iWatch will likely feature a touchscreen with minimal buttons and be very durable due to their sapphire displays.  The iPhone 6 is rumored to also have a sapphire display since Apple recently built a plant in Arizona to mass produce sapphire. An analyst estimates that 100 to 200 million 5″ displays can be produced each year.   The bill also says Apple is planning on producing 65 million iWatches by the end of 2014.

The release date for the iWatch is rumored to be announced alongside the iPhone 6 and iOS 8.  The next generation operating system for iOS devices is rumored to have a fitness-focused by adding a new app called Healthbook that will measure heart rate, blood pressure and other vitals.  We may see a glimpse of the iWatch at WWDC in June.
