After three long years, the iPod lineup has finally seen an update. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch have new consistent colors and the touch received updated internal specifications.

The iPod nano and iPod shuffle have the same specifications down the millimeter from the previous generation, but they have new colors. The pale pink, blue, yellow, green and purple colors have been retired in favor of a darker blue and pink and new gold. The silver and space gray colors are the same. Now every iPod model is available in the same colors.

The iPod touch comes with a better camera, much faster processor and a new Apple exclusive storage option. The iSight camera on the rear of the iPod appears to be similar to the iPhone 5c camera with an 8MP sensor while the FaceTime HD front camera appears to be the same one found on the iPhone 6 with a 1.2MP sensor. The rear camera can also record in slow motion up to 120fps and has cinematic video stabilization. In addition, the iPod is powered by the 64-bit A8 processor with M8 co-processor and has Bluetooth 4.1 technology, which is a step above the Bluetooth 4.0 technology in the iPhone 6. The iPod now has four storage options: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $249, 64GB for $299 and the Apple exclusive 128GB for $399. The design of the iPod only received a minor update with iPod touch loop button disappeared.

The new iPods are available to purchase on Apple.com with shipping in one business day.

Walmart may have just hinted at the new 6th generation iPod touch [Rumors]

The newest (and unannounced) iPod touch, the 6th generation, was expected to be announced at Apple’s October event since it fit perfectly in line with their theme.  The iPod, however, wasn’t announced and we just passed over two years since it was last updated.  Some recent rumors point to a major update with larger screen sizes, better battery life and other internal improvements in early 2015.  Some analysts, like Janna Dela Cruz of Christian Today, believe that the iPod will be here for Christmas, which means an Apple event is imminent.  Regardless of when it happens, it will likely be within the next year.

Searching for “iPod touch 6th generation” on Google does return some search results; specifically a page on Walmart.com.  The page is full of current and older iPods for sale under the title “iPod 6TH Generation.”  These same iPods appear on the page titled “iPod 5TH Generation.” Whether this is an accidental mistake or a hint at a new Apple event, that remains to be seen.

There are no other sites talking about the 6th generation iPod touch, we haven’t seen any leaked parts or heard any rumors. So this probably was a mistake unless we start to see more evidence of the iPod.

UPDATE: It was likely an error, but Apple accidentally leaked three new colors for the next-generation iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffle in early July 2015. Check out the post here.

New iPods reportedly delayed until early 2015

At Apple’s most recent event, we hoped that they would update the iPod lineup since it has been two years since the last major update.  The fifth-generation iPod touch came out in 2012 and new ones would have fit perfectly with Apple’s “it’s been way too long” event invitation.  According to updates by MacRumors and a report by Hallels, the iPod lineup will be updated in early 2015 and the iPod touch may borrow a few features from the iPhone 6/6 Plus.

Apple originally planned to update the iPods during their usual timeframe in September, but due to delays in development and testing, they won’t be announced until early 2015. Apple is also reportedly testing larger screen sizes for the iPod touch and attempting to fix the “bendgate” issue that is present on the iPhone 6 Plus.

No other rumors have come out yet, but we expect the iPod touch to borrow more features from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.  The current generation iPod touch has the A5 processor (the same one that’s found in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2).  We should at least see an upgrade to the A8 processor.  The camera is also only 5MP and the new iPad Air 2 was given an 8MP sensor so the iPod touch will likely have this as well.  Other features might include the Retina HD display, more storage capabilities, Touch ID and Apple Pay.

Apple may be looking to hold a special event in early 2015 where they will announce the release date for the Apple Watch and the new iPods. This would make the most sense, especially if the smart watch will work with the iPod touch for Apple Pay.  The watch was announced alongside the iPhone 6 in September so it was viewed as an accessory to the phone and not a standalone product. An announcement with the iPod touch would allow Apple to retain the view that the watch is an accessory.  I can also see the iPad Pro being shown off at this event.
