Apple's 2014 iPhone Product Lineup

Share this:

Apple held three special events over this past year: the Worldwide Developer’s Conference in June and two special events in the Fall.  They announced a plethora of new products in terms of hardware and software. We don’t expect Apple to hold another event this year, but the next one should be in early 2015. Apple is currently selling two generations of iPhone with four different models. Here’s the 2014 iPhone lineup:

iPhone 6 Rumor Roundup: Battery, "Sapphire" Display, Leaked Touch ID and Lightning

Share this:

If Deutsch Telekom and Tencent were correct in the release date for the iPhone 6, we are now in a two month countdown.  Both of them leaked details about the release date, saying that the iPhone 6 will come out on September 19th.  As we get closer to this release date, more leaked parts and details about the phone will come out.  This week we saw the battery’s capacity, another stress test for the “sapphire” display, leaked internal components, the production schedule for both variants and the camera sensor.

The Battery

There have been many reports surrounding the battery for the iPhone 6 recently.  One report said that the 5.5″ iPhone 6 may be delayed due to problems with the battery capacity.  Apple wants to make the iPhone 6 as thin as possible, likely 7mm.  This is .6mm less then the iPhone 5/5s.  To make a thin smartphone, you need a very thin battery.  The challenge then exists to increase the battery’s capacity while decreasing the size.  However, G for Games reported this past week that Apple has overcome their battery challenges by finding new suppliers: Desay, Simplo and Sunwoda.  Dynapack, their previous supplier for the battery in the iPhone 5, was unable to create a thinner battery.

Fully Assembled iPhone 6 Leaked

Share this:

The iPhone 6 is now rumored to be in mass production, which makes sense after case makers received mockups of the device.  We are entering into a new phase of leaked pictures, where we should start to see the phones fully assembled.  The other day we posted pictures of the iPhone’s metal chassis that were posted via Nowhereelse.fr and today we have pictures of the fully assembled iPhone 6 from Weibo user DreamerJimmy.

4.7" iPhone 6 Coming August, 5.5" iPhone 6 in September?

Share this:

Taiwan’s Economic Daily News reported that the 4.7″ iPhone 6 will be coming in August, while the larger 5.5″ iPhone 6 will be coming in September.  It cites supply chain sources for the information behind this new rumor.

iPhones have traditionally been introduced in the fall, like the iPhone 5/5s/5c in September and the iPhone 4S in October. In addition, many of the rumors we have heard suggest a September date for the 4.7″ iPhone 6 and production issues causing the 5.5″ iPhone 6 to be pushed back until early 2015.

iPhone 6 Concept Based on Leaked Pictures

MacFan, a Japanese magazine, posted the sketches below of the iPhone 6.  These pictures show two different-sized smartphones, which aligns with the rumor that Apple is working on releasing two models.  The first one is expected to have a 4.7-inch display and the second one, a 5.5-inch display.  According to the images, the devices will be slimmer, flat and bezel-free with a single LED flash and protruding camera (like found on the iPod touch).

These pictures inspired Nowhereelse.fr, a French Apple blog, and Martin Hajek, a graphic designer, to work together and design a very realistic concept for the iPhone 6.  If the leaked image above is actually for the iPhone 6, the concept below is likely to be what the iPhone 6 will look like.  These designs show an iPhone with rounded corners, a sapphire glass back and a rocker-style volume button.

iPhone 6 Front Panel Leaked

Usually, leaked images for future Apple products come out as the expected announcement date comes closer.  Although no one has really agreed on a date for the announcement (June at WWDC, July or usual September), one thing is clear, we will see the iPhone 6 before the end of the year.  The alleged front display was leaked recently alongside the current iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5/5S display.

Front Panel Leaked (03/02/14)

iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 front panels

iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 front panels

The iPhone 6 front panel has no side bezels and shows a larger display.  GSMArena calculated the size of the display based on the two beside it to be around 4.3 inches.  This is smaller than the rumored size of the new iPhone (between 4.7″ and 5.5″). I do have some problems with this alleged iPhone 6 display.  First and foremost, is the size.  It is extremely smaller than the rumors and it is not a large enough jump from the iPhone 5/5s.  The absence of bezels of the side and slightly smaller bezels on top do increase the display, but there is little difference compared to the 5s.  Also, the Home button cut out is cutting into the touchscreen.  Apple has a huge attention to detail and the Home button is no longer positioned in the middle of the bottom bezel.  They will likely keep the Home bottom centered on the iPhone 6.  It looks like it was cut incorrectly or this is not actually an iPhone 6 front panel. I would take this picture with a grain of salt, it might be a display of the prototype, but likely not part of the iPhone 6 we will see in a few months.

This picture that was leaked in early February (credit: MacRumors) seems more legitimate than the leaked front panel.  The Home button is perfectly centered, the display looks larger, the device looks thinner and it appears to have a redesign. MacRumors also calculated this display to be 4.7″. Even if this picture is fake, it gives us a good idea of what the rumors are suggesting.

Final Note

On a final note, no one really knows what the iPhone 6 will look like, but I think we will find out real soon. Follow on Twitter for the latest rumors and on Facebook for daily tips for saving battery power.

This image shows a probable prototype for the iPhone 6. The back of the device (top) has an Apple logo, FCC information, cut out for dual-LED flash (found on iPhone 5s) and camera. The front shows a larger display (around 5.25 inches diagonally), Touch ID on the Home button and thin bezels.

Here’s another close up of the iPhone 6. This device prominently shows Touch ID on the Home button, the lightning port, the cut outs for the speakers, microphone and headphone jack.  Also, the design is very similar to the iPad air and iPad mini.
