Analyst Expects Three iPad Pros in 2017, OLED Coming in 2018

This year is summing up to be a minor refresh year for iPhone and iPad, but next year there will be radical changes with both devices. The 2017 iPhone will get the complete redesign it deserved this year and the 2017 iPad Pro lineup will be shaken up with new display sizes. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple is planning to announce at least three iPad Pros next year.

In a new report, Kuo suggests Apple will be updating their iPad Pro lineup with three display sizes instead of the current two. The iPad will come with a 12.9”, 10.5”, and 9.7” screen size. The second-generation iPad Pro will not come out this year, and instead be updated next year with the other iPads. The 12.9” and 10.5” iPad Pro will be powered by A10X processor and the 9.7” iPad Pro will retain the A9X processor. Additionally, the smaller iPad will be offered as a low-cost option for the iPad Pro lineup.

The following year, 2018, will also be a major update for iPad. Apple is planning to replace the current LCD with a flexible OLED display. This does not necessarily mean the iPads will be more flexible, but they will likely incorporate 3D Touch.

There are no reports for the next-generation iPad Air or iPad mini, which may mean these iPads are likely to be discontinued. The rumored iPad Air 3 turned out to be the 9.7” iPad Pro. If Apple were to release another iPad Air, it may cause of cannibalism of sales for two iPads with 9.7” screen sizes released together. The iPad mini 4 was released only a year ago so it is possible for Apple to release another iPad.

If Kuo’s analysis is correct, then the iPad will likely not be at the special media event planned for September 7th. Hopefully Apple will be planning an event in the spring, which would be one year after the 9.7” iPad Pro was released.

On Monday, Apple held their first special media event of the year where they announced the 4-inch iPhone SE, 9.7-inch iPad Pro and new bands for Apple Watch. The event, as stated by Tim Cook, will be one of the last special events to be held Apple’s Town Hall at their Cupertino Campus.

iPhone SE

iPhone SE announcement

Apple announces the iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE is Apple’s next-generation 4-inch iPhone that replaced the iPhone 5s in their lineup. While it does have relatively the same external design as the iPhone 5s, it has very upgraded internal specifications that allow it to match the iPhone 6s in terms of performance and camera quality. With its A9 processor and M9 embedded coprocessor, 12MP rear camera, 4K video recording, Live Photos functionality and rose gold color, it is almost a miniature version of the iPhone 6s. The iPhone SE starts at $399 unsubsidized for 16GB, or free with a two-year contract. Pre-orders start Thursday, March 24th and it’s available Thursday, March 31st.

9.7″ iPad Pro

9.7" iPad Pro announcement

Apple announces the 9.7″ iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro, which is said to be one of Apple’s best products that customers love, received an update in terms of size. In addition to the 12.9″ model which came out last fall, there’s a new 9.7″ model that is successor to the iPad Air 2. It has a higher-quality display that is less reflective and brighter, dual stereo speakers, the A9X processor, 12MP rear (protruding camera) with 4K video recording and a new LED flash and a 5MP front camera. The smaller iPad Pro starts at $599 for the 32GB Wi-Fi only model and, like the iPhone SE, pre-orders start on March 24th and it’s released March 31st.

For the first time ever, Apple is offering the iPad Pro (both sizes) in a 256GB configuration. This significantly larger storage size is also rumored for the iPhone 7.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch announcement

Apple announces new bands for Apple Watch.

While we did not see a new Apple Watch model like many news outlets predicted, we did see a whole set of new bands and the Apple Watch Sport saw a price drop. There are now twenty-two different colors of the Sport band, with yellow, royal blue and apricot (light orange) added today, and seven colors of the new Woven Nylon band. It’s available in pink, blue, royal blue, red and black. The Apple Watch Sport now starts at $299 ($50 price decrease) for the 38mm model and $349 ($50 price decrease) for the 42mm model.

Other Updates

Apple released new software updates for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV and Apple Watch today. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch can update to iOS 9.3 which has new features like Night Shift, password-protected Notes and better personalization in News. For the Apple TV, tvOS 9.2 is available with Siri remote dictation, app folders and iCloud Photo Library. The Apple Watch can also be updated to watchOS 2.2, which comes with an enhanced Maps app and support for multiple watch pairing. With the exception of the Apple Watch, all of these updates can be downloaded through the Settings app on their respective devices. The Apple Watch update can be downloaded via the Apple Watch app on iPhone.

The iPad Air 3, which was what we expected Apple to call the next-generation 9.7″ tablet, is no longer going to be an “Air” but a “Pro.” A report on 9to5Mac suggests that Apple will be dropping the “Air” name from their iPad lineup and instead offering the tablet as a smaller version of the iPad Pro.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the next-generation 9.7″ iPad will be part of the iPad Pro lineup. Rumors still point to specs matching that of the iPad Pro: A9X processor, dual-speaker system and support for Apple’s smart accessories. The iPad Pro will work with the pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil and have a Smart Connector for a smaller version of Apple’s Smart Keyboard. Their new keyboard will be announced at the event alongside the tablet.

The iPad Pro (mini??) will have the same color options, same storage sizes and same cellular models as the current iPad Pro, but it will be priced more closely to the iPad Air 2. Apple has also been winding down production for the iPad mini 2 and iPad Air (1st gen.) so these will probably be discontinued soon. In addition, the iPad Air 2 will probably see a drop in price and be discontinued in the fall.

The new 9.7″ iPad Pro will be announced alongside the rumored iPhone SE and new Apple Watch bands at a special media event on March 15th with the release date for all new products planned for March 18th.
