Touch ID Coming to the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and iPhone 6

A rumor appeared this week on cecb2b.com that Apple will include Touch ID on the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and the iPhone 6.  Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the supplier of the A8 processor, will be responsible for producing the assemblies for the fingerprint sensor.  This isn’t the first time a report came out claiming the new iPads would be including Touch ID.  Another report from early April, which written by Ming Chi-Kuo, said that both iPads would be featuring the fingerprint sensor.  Kuo also said the iPads will likely be announced in the 3rd quarter.  In addition, references to Touch ID appeared in iOS 7.1 for the iPads.

The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini are both expected to be announced in October.  The iPad Air is rumored to have the same design, the A8 Processor and Touch ID, while the iPad mini should have the same form factor, the A8 processor, Touch ID and the older generations will likely be priced cheaper.

Here are the latest news and rumors from this past week.

But, first here’s a very important security note.  Apple has confirmed that iOS, OSX and iCloud are not affected by the Heartbleed flaw so you do not need to change your passwords for them.  It is highly suggested you change your passwords for these websites.

iPhone 6 Case Leaked

Nowhereelse.fr found a picture on MobileFun.co.uk that is supposedly of cases for the iPhone 6.  The smaller case would fit a phone with a 4.7-inch display and the larger would fit a phone with a 5.5-inch display.  The case has all the normal holes: lock button on top, Lightning port on bottom, holes for the microphone, etc.  There is a new hole on the left side of the case that recent reports are suggesting will be the new home of the lock button.  It’s hard to tell if this case is actually made for the iPhone 6 or if case makers are just getting excited.  Nowhereelse.fr notes that MobileFun is not very reliable and also this case doesn’t line up with this 3D case model we saw earlier this week.

iTunes to Get Major Update

iTunes Radio is struggling with competitors like Pandora so Apple is looking to bring more interest to their radio and with the iTunes Store.  Rumors recently have suggested Apple will increase the sound quality of songs in iTunes, iTunes Radio may become its own app for both iOS and Android and the entire iTunes experience may be updated.

Kickstarter Project of the Week Update

This past week, I posted about the EverDock Go project on Kickstarter.  FUZ Designs had enormous success with the EverDock that they decided to create a version that stayed in the car.  As of my posting, they already received their full funding and still had 36 days left to go.  If you are interested in purchasing the EverDock Go, click here to get one at their Kickstarter price of $39 (regular retail will be $50).

Apple's 2014 Roadmap by KGI Securities Analyst, Ming Chi Kuo

KGI Securities analyst, Ming Chi Kuo, released a report recently detailing the technical specifications for the iWatch, iPhone 6, iPad and Apple TV.  The report is based on sources inside Apple’s supply chain.  In the past, he has been very accurate with other products so the details below will likely be spot on with their respective products.

iPad Air 2

The second generation iPad air (or sixth generation iPad for those of you keeping track) will be updated this year.  Since the iPad was redesigned last year, it is unlikely Apple will offer major external changes.  Instead, Apple will add Touch ID (introduced on the iPhone 5s), A8 processor and an 8MP camera (also on the iPhone 5s).

iPad Mini with Retina

The second generation iPad mini, which was released last fall, included a Retina display with a similar body.  This year’s model will include Touch ID, the A8 processor and a similar form factor.  Kuo also says that the first generation model will likely be cheaper (I’m hoping for $229).

iPad Pro

Recent rumors said this iPad would not be coming out until 2015 due to supply constraints and other problems.  Kuo supports this rumor and believes it will also come with a touch pad.

Apple TV

Although a full-sized Apple TV is not expected this year (at least by Kuo), he does say that the set-top box will be getting its own App Store and motion control technology (like found on the Xbox Kinect system). If it does get an App Store, it will support gaming (as confirmed by Financial Times).

iPad: Latest Rumors

This past couple of weeks I have written posts about the iPhone 6 and iOS 8, but now it is time for the iPad.  Some rumors came up this week about the 12.9″ iPad (code named iPad pro) and third generation iPad mini won’t be launching until 2015 and the iPad air will have some iPhone 5s improvements.  At this point in time, there are not many rumors for the next generation iPads because they usually don’t launch until October.  With that said, here’s a quick guide to what we know so far about the iPad air, iPad mini and iPad pro.

This iPad, for those of you who are keeping track, is the iPad 6 (or the sixth generation iPad.)  The redesign of the iPad 5 came with the new name “air” which relates to the lightness and thinness of it.  There’s a lack of rumors for the new iPads, so many of the points will be educated guesses based on Apple’s history.

  • A8 Processor, which is the same processor that will be found in the iPhone 6 (KGI Securities)
  • Touch ID, found on the iPhone 5s (KGI Securities)
  • Similar design
  • Improved internal components
  • Better camera (higher than 5MP)
  • Release date: October 2014, some rumors suggest April or June at WWDC

iPad mini 3

iPad mini with Retina display

iPad mini with Retina display

This will be the third generation iPad mini, but the second one to feature a Retina display.

  • Release date: 2015 (KGI Securities)
  • Touch ID
  • They predict the release date won’t be until 2015 because the iPad mini currently has updated internal components (A7 chip and Retina display) and can survive another year.
  • This reminds me of a rumor saying the iPad mini 2 (the current generation) wouldn’t come out until 2014…but the rumor wasn’t true since it came out in October.

This 12.9″ rumored iPad will be aimed at the education market, business market and at developers creating apps for the iPad.  The larger display will be a hybrid between the laptop and a tablet.  Here are some of the latest rumors:

  • Quad-core A8 Processor, available in 128GB size, arriving in Fall 2014 (Patrick Wang of Evercore Partners)
  • Arriving in 2015 because Apple is busy working on the iWatch (KGI Securities)
  • 64-bit computing with an UHD (ultra-high definition) display (Korea Times)
  • Touch ID, 64-bit A7 or A8 chip (TechRadar)
  • Arriving with late spring/winter or October 2014 release, 2 models (2K display launching in April 2014 and 4K display launching in October) (Pad News)
