On Thursday, Apple held their final special media event of the year to announce the rest of their 2014 product lineup. At the event, they showed off the rumored iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3.  The Air comes with a bunch of new features, like burst mode, more storage capabilities and a slimmer design.  The mini has the same design and features, but it now has Touch ID, works with Apple Pay and comes in a gold color.

The previous generations of iPad mini and iPad Air are available for sale

Apple’s 2014 iPad lineup consists of the iPad mini, Retina iPad mini 2, Retina iPad mini 3, iPad Air and iPad Air 2. All previous generations of iPad have received a price drop so this allowed Apple to discontinue the iPad 4. Preorders for the new tablets started on Friday, October 17th and shipping is currently at 2-4 business days.

iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 Event Rumored for October 21

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were announced recently, but Apple still has a few products left in their lineup.  If history is any indication of what to expect (and it usually is), we should see the second-generation iPad Air and third-generation iPad mini next month.

Micah Singleton of The Daily Dot, an online newspaper, wrote that Apple is plan on holding an event on October 21st.  Citing sources familiar with the matter, he says that the company will reveal two new iPads and the release date for OS X Yosemite. The new operating system for Mac will supposedly be released immediately following the event.  Last year, Apple held an event on October 22nd where they announced the redesigned iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and release date for OS X Mavericks.

The iPads are expected to get some subtle design changes like recessed buttons, a thinner profile, Touch ID and a microphone on the back next to the camera.  The Apple TV will hopefully be refreshed at this event because it’s been over two years since it has seen any updates.

Leaked Pictures of iPad Air 2 Dummy Model

The iPhone 6 has been in the spotlight for a good half of the year, so now we pretty much know what it will look like.  The next-generation iPads, though, have been quite silent until now.  Pictures of the second generation iPad Air (or sixth generation full-sized iPad) came out last week showing us what the front and back will look like.  On Monday of this past week, another picture appeared by Nowhereelse.fr that shows an iPhone 5s laying on an iPad Air with Touch ID and MacRumors posted a picture of the iPad mini 3.

The front of the iPad Air 2 shows a similar design to what Apple introduced us to last year.

We may be seeing an upgrade in the megapixels and specs of the front camera in addition to the new fingerprint sensor.  Apple typically doesn’t externally redesign their products every year so this flat and light design will likely be with us for a while.  Instead, they upgrade the internal components, like the camera and processor.  For the iPad Air 2, we can expect an 8MP rear camera and the A8 Processor.
