Introducing the 8GB iPhone 5c and iPad 4

The new 8GB iPhone 5c and "old" iPad with Retina display.

The rumors came a few hours before it happened, but they were right.  This morning Apple quietly discontinued the iPad 2 (from 2012) and reintroduced the iPad with Retina display (or iPad 4).  In addition, they also released the 8GB iPhone 5c.  Although it is currently not on sale in the United States, it does have a cheaper price tag in countries that pay the unsubsidized price and it is expected to be sold in the United States very soon.

The iPad with Retina display comes with the A6X dual-core processor (better than the first generation iPad mini), the same camera as the iPad Air and is available in 16GB for $399 (WiFi only) or $529 (Cellular + WiFi).  Apple’s lineup of iPads now consists of the iPad Air, iPad with Retina display, iPad mini with Retina display and the iPad mini (all which use the Lightning connector).  Once Apple discontinues the iPhone 4S, all their products will be using the Lightning connector (except for the iPod shuffle which uses the headphone jack).

The iPad Air (the fifth generation iPad) was announced at Apple’s October 22 Event.  In addition to a brand new design for the full-sized iPad (mostly taken from the iPad mini), Apple updated its internal components.  This iPad will be available for purchase starting November 1.  Here’s a breakdown of the new iPad Air with features, tech specs and what’s included along with rumors for future iPads.

iPad 5 Rumors, Release Date

Last month, Apple introduced us to two brand new iPhones.  The first was the iPhone 5s, the predecessor to the iPhone 5, and the second was the iPhone 5c, which is a more colorful iPhone with similar specs to the iPhone 5.  The iPhone 5S also came with some cool new features, such as Touch ID, 64-bit chip, two processors and an improved camera.

Apple is expected to release two new iPads this month: the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2.  Rumor has it that the iPad 5 will be smaller, lighter, more efficient on battery power and may also have some cool new features, such as Touch ID and an improved camera.  The picture below and a bunch more pictures of the iPad 5 come from Sonny Dickson.

Release Date

Last year, Apple held their iPad event on October 23.  If Apple’s history tells us anything about their future (which it usually does), this year’s event will be sometime between mid October to early November.  I am betting on something closer to October 15.

iPad 2 vs. iPad 3rd gen vs. iPad with Retina

Share this:

Walmart.com has a section on its website for Today Only, free shipping. It lists the iPad 2 starting at only $399. A bunch of people have been asking me about iPads recently about which one to get and here’s a quick 10 minute guide to each one.

iPad 2 (Feb 2011) starts at $399

  • does not have a retina screen (has a similar quality display like the iPhone 3GS and iPad mini)
  • features two low quality cameras
  • comes in both the WiFi only models and 3G models
  • does not feature Siri
  • can upgrade to iOS 6, but limited because the lack of Siri
  • does not have the lighting port (but that is not really a problem)
  • where to buy: Walmart.com, Apple.com, Amazon.com, etc.

iPad 3rd generation (Feb 2012) *hard to find* starts at $350, $379 refurbished

  • retina screen (like the iPhone 4 and iPad with Retina Display)
  • two cameras, one being a 5MP (like the iPhone 4)
  • comes in both the WiFi only models and 4G LTE models
  • features Siri
  • can upgrade to iOS 6 and not limited because it has Siri
  • does not have lightning port (but, again, that is not really a problem)
  • where to buy: Apple.com

iPad with Retina Display, 4th gen. (October 2012) starts at $499

  • retina screen (like iPhone 4 and iPad 3rd generation)
  • two cameras, one being a 5MP (like iPhone 4)
  • comes in both WiFi only models and 4G LTE models
  • features Siri
  • can upgrade to iOS 6 and not limited because it has Siri
  • has lightning port
  • where to buy: Apple.com, Walmart.com, Amazon.com

NOTE: The iPad 2 on Walmart.com for only $399 with free shipping is a bad deal. You can get a newer refurbished iPad 3 on the Apple website for $379 and shipping is always free!!! 😀

Also I am super biased towards the iPad 3rd generation (it’s the one I have). I absolutely love mine, but with a low budget, the iPad 2 is a good alternative because at least it’s an iPad 🙂
