Apple Updates iCloud Storage Pricing

Share this:

When Apple announced iOS 8 at their worldwide developer’s conference in June, they also announced new pricing for iCloud. Apple gives each user 5GB of free storage in the cloud and then offers plans which charge a monthly fee for more storage. Currently 15GB is $20/year, 20GB is $40/year and 50GB is $100/year.  Each of the following new price changes sounds a lot better though:

  • 5GB is free for every user
  • 20GB is $0.99/month
  • 200GB is $3.99/month
  • 500GB is $9.99/month
  • 1TB (or 1000GB) is $19.99/month

If you don’t use that much storage, like me, then these plans don’t seem too bad. However, if you are storing the backups for all your Apple devices, all your thousands of pictures and hundreds of documents, then this pricing structure isn’t good compared to DropBox and Google Drive. DropBox offers 1TB of storage for $9.99/month or $99.99 annually ($8.33/month.)

When you download iOS 8 on your iPhone next week, here’s how you can change your iCloud Storage Plan:

Settings app: iCloud –> Storage –> Buy More Storage –> select your upgraded amount –> Buy
