About a week ago, Apple held a special media event where they announced the rumored iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2. The new smartwatch has a much faster processor, is completely waterproof, and is designed to be more of a sport watch than a luxury watch. Apple also revamped their lineup by removing some watches and adding others.

When Apple first announced the Apple Watch to us in September, they created three collections that would categorize the function and determine the materials used in production. There is the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition. Yesterday, Apple gave us more details about each one.

For each of the following collections, the Apple Watch comes in a either a 38mm or 42mm size.

With the various watch sizes, band colors and case colors, there are 10 models available starting at $349.

The Apple Watch will be available for preorder starting April 10th and comes out April 24th.

Apple Retail Stores to use safes to hold Apple Watch Edition

When the Apple Watch finally launches in April, there will be three main collections of them: Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch (regular), and Apple Watch Edition.  The first two will be on the lower price scale ($349 and $1000, respectively) while the Edition may be up to $5,000. To protect this premium smart watch overnight, 9to5Mac reports that Apple will be installing custom-built safes in their stores.

Since Apple Watch Edition is made of sapphire glass and 18-karat gold, it will require additional security for safekeeping during the night.  Inside sources to 9to5Mac that Apple will be installing custom built safes into their stores that have MagSafe chargers inside. The watches will be able to charge during the night so they are ready to go the next day. The other less expensive watch collections will likely stay out on the floor during the night like other Apple products.

In addition, 9to5Mac also reports that there will likely be a different sale process for customers who want to buy the Edition collection. They may keep the watch in a protective case during the day and only remove it when customers request to try it out, like in a jewelry store.  The Apple Retail Store is a busy place and with a product so small and worth so much, additional security measures will need to be put in place to protect the watch.  Sources say that Apple is preparing to reorganize their stores in order to create space for the new Apple Watch display area.

Apple Watch Edition May Cost Over $1,000

Last week, Apple announced their rumored smart watch to the world.  The Apple Watch is the first product of the wearables category and comes with a starting price tag of $349.  The watch is available in three collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition.  The starting price likely belongs to the sport watch, because the Edition collection has a watch face made of 18-Karat gold.  This may cause it to be priced at over $1,000.

According to TechCrunch, the Edition watch material is actually made of gold and could sell for as much as $1,200.  To come up with this prediction, the site contacted jewelers familiar with 18-Karat gold watches and they collaborated that Apple would charge a premium for this watch.  A watch expert in Pennsylvania, Chad Rickicki, said the watch would cost about $600 to make. If you add in the other components like the sapphire crystal display and computer-on-a-chip, the price for the watch could be double this.

The site mentions that luxury companies, like Prada and Louis Vuitton, may be getting ready to design their own watch bands. Apple may be entering a new world of premium products (over their already premium products.)  They would likely hold quality to a higher standard and may seek partnerships with the above companies.  Feld & Volk may also be interested in designing watch bands for the Edition collection.

The Apple Watch is expected out in early 2015, with the sport edition likely starting at $349.  The regular Apple Watch will probably have a higher price and the Edition collection may be even more.

Apple Announces First Wearable Product: Apple Watch

In case you missed the announcement on Tuesday, Apple announced their first wearable product and entered into a new category of products.  The Apple Watch, which is not called the rumored “iWatch” name, is a smart watch that works as an accessory to the iPhone.  The phone transmits data to the watch and vice versa so the person can quickly see notifications, messages, fitness levels, and more. It not only functions as a watch, but also as a calendar, a map, a heart-rate monitor, a messenger and much more. The watch also works with the iPhone 6 and Apple Pay.

The Apple Watch is available in multiple sizes and styles.  The rectangular watch face is available in 38mm and 42mm.  The face comes in two finishes and is made with an alloy of stainless steel, aluminum or a unique combination of 18-Karat rose and yellow gold.  The bands come in multiple styles and colors: link bracelet, sport band, leather loop, classic buckle, modern buckle and Milanese loop. In addition, the software on the watch is very customizable and has more then ten different styles for showing the time.  Developers are also working on their own apps to work on the watch.

If there are too many choices available for the indecisive customer, Apple created three collections to help with selection.  The first one is the regular Apple Watch, which has a stainless steel case, sapphire display and comes with any of the previously mentioned bands. The second watch collection is the Apple Watch Sport.   This one has the aluminum watch casing, strengthened Ion-X glass and comes with the sport band in one of five colors.  The final collection, which is the Apple Watch Edition, comes with a watch case made of 18-Karat gold, a sapphire crystal display and either the sport band, modern buckle or classic buckle.

The new smart watch comes in three new collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition.

Apple doesn’t go into detail with their marketing material about the technical specifications about the smart watch, but they do say a little bit about the design.  The watch face is made of either Ion-X glass or sapphire crystal (depending on the model), it features a touchscreen that is pressure-sensitive and is of Retina quality.  The right side has a digital crown that acts like the Home button and allows the screen to zoom in and out on a certain object, like a map. On the backside of the watch face, a ceramic cover with sapphire lenses protect infrared and LED lights and photodiodes that measure your heart rate.

Apple lists the starting price at $349, but this likely is for the lower-end smart watches.  The Apple Watch Edition will be the most expensive, probably around twice the price, because of its 18-Karat casing and sapphire crystal display.  Although the smart watch was announced in September, it won’t be available for sale until early 2015.  Apple may hold another event where they go into more detail about the watch and test out 3rd-party apps prior to the release date. Finally, check out the guide on CNET that has a hands-on approach to their post.
