The Apple Watch is advertised as Apple’s most personal device yet. It comes with a plethora of new features, ways to communicate, customizations, ways to tell time, track your fitness and more. Right out of the box, the Apple Watch will be able to do so much without the thousands of apps available on the Apple Watch App Store.

For the timekeeping aspect of the Apple Watch, there are numerous ways to display the time with a chronograph, color, modular, utility, Mickey Mouse (we need to have Mickey Mouse), simple, motion, solar and astronomy clocks. In addition, each clock can be highly customizable to include a stopwatch, calendar, moon phases, the weather and more. Each clock can also be customized with different colors to make it very personal and specific to you.

The Apple Watch also has new innovative ways to communicate with friends and loved ones. The Digital Touch feature allows you to sketch a drawing, tap a rhythm and send your heartbeat to someone else with an Apple Watch. The watch works with your iPhone so any incoming notifications, like text messages, phone calls, mail and more can be accessed, managed and replied to on your wrist.

The watch is also designed to be a fitness and health companion. The Activity app made by Apple tracks your exercise, how many calories burned and tells you when to take a break from sitting. Their second app, Workout, shows real-time updates about your current activity, like calories burned, pace and distance. It also works with a variety of activities so the Apple Watch only uses the sensors it needs. If needed for your exercise, the Apple Watch will use the GPS sensor in the iPhone.

In addition, the Apple Watch comes with a number of built-in apps, like Stocks, Photos and Calendar, and has access to its own App Store with over a thousand apps already available. The Apple Watch also works with Apple Pay for those users that have the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c.

Apple Announces First Wearable Product: Apple Watch

In case you missed the announcement on Tuesday, Apple announced their first wearable product and entered into a new category of products.  The Apple Watch, which is not called the rumored “iWatch” name, is a smart watch that works as an accessory to the iPhone.  The phone transmits data to the watch and vice versa so the person can quickly see notifications, messages, fitness levels, and more. It not only functions as a watch, but also as a calendar, a map, a heart-rate monitor, a messenger and much more. The watch also works with the iPhone 6 and Apple Pay.

The Apple Watch is available in multiple sizes and styles.  The rectangular watch face is available in 38mm and 42mm.  The face comes in two finishes and is made with an alloy of stainless steel, aluminum or a unique combination of 18-Karat rose and yellow gold.  The bands come in multiple styles and colors: link bracelet, sport band, leather loop, classic buckle, modern buckle and Milanese loop. In addition, the software on the watch is very customizable and has more then ten different styles for showing the time.  Developers are also working on their own apps to work on the watch.

If there are too many choices available for the indecisive customer, Apple created three collections to help with selection.  The first one is the regular Apple Watch, which has a stainless steel case, sapphire display and comes with any of the previously mentioned bands. The second watch collection is the Apple Watch Sport.   This one has the aluminum watch casing, strengthened Ion-X glass and comes with the sport band in one of five colors.  The final collection, which is the Apple Watch Edition, comes with a watch case made of 18-Karat gold, a sapphire crystal display and either the sport band, modern buckle or classic buckle.

The new smart watch comes in three new collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition.

Apple doesn’t go into detail with their marketing material about the technical specifications about the smart watch, but they do say a little bit about the design.  The watch face is made of either Ion-X glass or sapphire crystal (depending on the model), it features a touchscreen that is pressure-sensitive and is of Retina quality.  The right side has a digital crown that acts like the Home button and allows the screen to zoom in and out on a certain object, like a map. On the backside of the watch face, a ceramic cover with sapphire lenses protect infrared and LED lights and photodiodes that measure your heart rate.

Apple lists the starting price at $349, but this likely is for the lower-end smart watches.  The Apple Watch Edition will be the most expensive, probably around twice the price, because of its 18-Karat casing and sapphire crystal display.  Although the smart watch was announced in September, it won’t be available for sale until early 2015.  Apple may hold another event where they go into more detail about the watch and test out 3rd-party apps prior to the release date.
