While many people who pre-ordered the iPhone 7 are still waiting for their phone to be shipped, the focus turns to next year’s iPhone. 2017 will be the tenth anniversary of iPhone and Apple is expected to do something big. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, the new Phone will have a complete redesign and new name.

Citing supply chain sources, Kuo wrote a new note to investors about the 2017 iPhone and its redesign. The phone is likely to be called the ‘iPhone 8’ due to its new design that is unlike the previous iPhone 6 series. It will have an all-glass casing that is more durable and scratch resistant with high gloss. It will be similar to the jet black iPhone 7 except it will not be vulnerable to micro-scratches.

With iOS 10, Apple completely changed the lock screen to be less “slide to unlock” and more “press home to unlock.” Basically, they removed a gesture we have used for nearly ten years on the iPhone. The iPhone now unlocks with a press of the Home button. This works well on the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with a tactile Home button, but not so well on their older Touch ID phones. In the settings app, you can now restore part of the function of the lock screen to the old method.


Testing is Underway for Apple’s Rumored Siri Smart-Home Speaker

In late May, we reported that Apple was working on a new category of hardware with a Siri-powered smart home speaker. It would be similar to the Amazon’s Echo. According to a new report by Bloomberg, the rumored Siri-powered device is currently undergoing prototype testing.

The rumors indicated the device would have the same functions as the Echo, but be much smarter. It would be capable of controlling your home’s functions like the Home app does on the iPhone and iPad. It will also have a camera which detects who is speaking and their emotional state using facial recognition technology. The speaker will this information to select the person’s preferences like their playlists or enhance the tone of the room. Finally, it will be activated with “Hey Siri.” Hopefully Apple will enhance Siri to be similar in functionality to Microsoft’s Cortana or Amazon’s Alexa.


Apple is Working on New Health Apps for Apple Watch to Track Sleep

During the Apple’s summer event for developers, they introduced the next software version for the Apple Watch which included a new Breathe app. It is responsible for calming the user’s mind during the day by reminding them to take a moment to focus on breathing. This app, which is another step towards the health industry, is not the only one Apple is planning to release.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is working on new health apps for the Apple Watch that will track and analyze more data. People familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg said there is a sleep-tracking app in the works. There is also an app that measures the time it takes for the heart rate to slow from its peak to the normal resting level. Both of these apps would not require any special hardware and can already work on the Apple Watch.

On Wednesday, Apple held a special media event in San Fransisco, California to announce the new lineup of iPhone, Apple Watch, and the major software updates. The next-generation iPhone, called the ‘iPhone 7’ and ‘iPhone 7 Plus,’ feature a similar design to their predecessors with a complete refresh in internals.


Existing iPhone and iPad Lineups Updated with Better Storage and Pricing

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were announced on Wednesday, but they were not the only devices with updates. Apple also refreshed their iPhone and iPad lineup with new prices and better storage capacities.

The new iPhone lineup has doubled the amount of storage and better pricing across most of the models, via Apple.

For last year’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple has retained all the color options but improved the price and storage capacity. The phones are now available for $100 less for retail price, or roughly $5 less per month with iPhone installments. The iPhone 6s can be purchased for $22/month and the iPhone 6s Plus for $27/month. Additionally, Apple has doubled the minimum storage capacity from 16GB to 32GB and removed the 64GB capacity. The iPhone 6s/6s Plus are still available in 128GB. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have also be removed.

Despite the newness of the iPhone SE, Apple has updated it too. The iPhone SE is still available in 16GB and 64GB, but the larger storage capacity is $50 less. The iPhone SE is now $399 and $449 for full retail price. 

Apple has also refreshed their iPad lineup by removing some storage capacities, doubling others, and offering better prices. The iPad mini 2 is now only available in 32GB and starts at the price of the previous 16GB model. The iPad mini 4 is only offered in 32GB and 128GB now and the prices are lowered to the previous 16GB and 64GB models, respectively. The iPad Air 2 has retained the same prices with twice the amount of storage.

Finally, the iPad Pro has had the greatest shakeup in the lineup with storage pricing remaining the same but lower prices. The 128GB model is now $50 less and the 256GB model is $100 less. The prices also show a more consistent lineup with each model progressing by $100 for increased storage. For example, the 9.7″ iPad Pro Wi-Fi only model starts at $599 for 32GB, $699 for 128GB, and $799 for 256GB. Previously there as a difference of $150 between each storage size.

The new storage sizes of the iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2 currently have an estimate delivery window of September 16-17th.. Also the iPhone 6s with the new 32GB storage size is currently unavailable and will be able to pre-order alongside the iPhone 7 tonight.
